Team Shaanxi, represented by Fan Zhengyi, Lei Peifan and Mei Xiwen, is the defending Champion. They were in action in today’s evening session, on the main table. This evening session actually started with the official Opening Ceremony. All teams were introduced into the arena, guided by ladies in beautiful traditional dresses. As usual, there were speeches by officials and the presentation of the trophy, before the action started on the tables.
I was able to watch it on stream and took a few screenshots of the ceremony …

as well as from the opening match of the defending team

Fan Zhengyi was extremely tense and nervous at the start of the match and couldn’t pot a ball for the first ten minutes or so … but still managed to win the first frame somehow and played much better after that. Mei Xiwen is very sound tactically. Shaanxi won by 5-0.
The format of this event is quite interesting …
Each match at the group stage is played over 5 frames. It doesn’t matter if a team has already won the match, all five frames are played and count. Frames 1,2,4 and 5 are “normal” frames, frame 3 is played as a “double” with alternate shots. Each player is involved in two frames.
I would like this type of format being used by WPBSA/WST for the World Cup round robin phase.
Nice to see Mei Xiwen playing again. Shortly after reaching the top 50, covid came, and he abandoned his professional career. He had a baby son in Shenzhen, and many relatives in Wuhan. But he’s still continued to play where possible, has his own club, and is involved in coaching.
The least CBSA could have done for him is to help him with the organisational aspects of the trip and his transport=> sigh.
I even get a unpopular thought why some tour players missing this event if they have to qualify for the spot.(If they have to pay their travel expenses, knowing the remoteness of arena and next event in Xi’an, it is reasonable to play less seriously, even it may be a ranking event.)
P.S. I am completely amazed an influencer pointed out there was no room available even players wish to upgrade their rooms.
Er… Yuan made some further posts. Hope he will not be “hated” or tripped by the officials of CSBA.
I hope so too. The event marked the return of international players to China since the covid crisis started. I think it was important for them to show that those international players – some of them amongst the biggest stars of the sport – were eager to come back to the China, as they felt safe to do so, and very welcome. There was some excellent snooker on show as well. As such it was a success. The only lower aspect was the rather low crowd attendance. However, it’s hard for me to comment on that as I don’t have the context. Maybe Yuan doesn’t see the bigger picture here? That said, he has a point as well. He made it to the semi-finals, and had to rush to compete in the Team Championship only the next day. That was probably very stressful and tiring. The least CBSA could have done for him is to help him with the organisational aspects of the trip and his transport.
He does and he doesn’t… I’m sure he understands the importance of the event, and the necessary promotional aspects (inviting those top players). But he will also understand that in any competitive tournament, players have to be treated equally, within reason. Yuan Sijun is not the sort of character to ‘go quietly’, but it will probably get him into trouble.

I’m afraid it will get Yuan into trouble with the Chinese, but he has every right and reason to demand to receive equal treatment to the top European players. Or don’t invite him to play. If he is not treated correctly in his own country, how could we expect good treatment for him in Europe?
