Here is the announcement shared by WST:
O’Sullivan Withdraws From Unibet British Open
Ronnie O’Sullivan has pulled out of next week’s Unibet British Open for medical reasons.
O’Sullivan was due to face Sanderson Lam in the opening round on Monday September 22nd at 7pm. He has been replaced in the draw by the highest available player from the 2025 Q School ranking list, Daniel Womersley.
The tournament at Cheltenham Racecourse runs from September 22-28.
No big surprise but disappointing all the same…
Sometimes you can track which tournaments he will withdraw from, based on previous seasons. This is the third year in a row that he’s withdrawn from the British Open! Has only actually played in it once since it returned to the calendar.
The German Masters is another one. He enters and withdraws (or heavily loses a qualifier) every year. Hasn’t actually played a ranking match IN Germany since 2017!
Is “for medical reasons” still plausible, Monique? I’m not following his social media or so btw, but I know you follow news.
He’s not very active on social media anyway and has not been for many years now and he doesn’t share much personal stuff on it when he does post. TBH I don’t know. He’s been battling depression for years. What I do know is that I have seen him very, very low at tournaments. I have seen him cry after totally “normal” matches that he had won, convinced that he had been awful and had let the fans down. I have seen him being sick ahead of matches because of anxiety. Maybe he just doesn’t want to get himself through that anymore. He’s nearly 50, and has nothing to prove to anyone.
He had some very upbeat videos on tiktok or something which showed him exercise and said how it will help his snooker. Someone on FB said he already announced he’d play the UK next. I just don’t see why enter the British, he didn’t enter the Home Nations, fine, but hoped these withdrawals were over.
Sometimes they have to enter events a very long time before the actual start of it for various reasons. WST decides on the calendar, setting the “windows” for entering events. I’m not sure what was the exact situation in this case.
Thanks for the info, to you both.
