2023 World Grand Prix – Taking stock of the results so far

The news about the max fixing crisis have overshadowed the current tournament, the 2023 World Grand Prix and it’s a shame because there has been a lot of excellent snooker on show. I have to admit that the latest developments around the match fixing enquiry have affected me more that I thought it would, and going by reactions on social media I’m not the only one in that situation. But let’s forget that for a moment…

You will find all the detailed results on snooker.org

I covered the opening evening and first full day here.

The report on Ronnie’s win over Barry Hawkins is here

The report on Ronnie’s defeat by Noppon Saengkham is here

Other than that…

On what happened on the second full day, here are the reports by WST and some personal comments

Afternoon session

Patience Key For Magician

Shaun Murphy scored a 4-0 win over Ali Carter on day three of the Duelbits World Grand Prix in Cheltenham and afterwards admitted he needs to remain patient in his quest for a first major title since 2020.

Murphy has stated he is extremely happy with his game at present, but has been outdone by a number of top level performances in recent tournaments. The most notable of those losses was a 6-0 whitewash at the hands of Stuart Bingham at last week’s Masters. The last time Murphy picked up professional silverware was at the 2020 Welsh Open, shortly before the pandemic hit.

The 2005 World Champion still has work to do in order to secure his place in the remainder of the Duelbits Series. He currently sits in 14th position on the one-year list. The top 16 progress to the Players Championship and only the best eight will earn a place in the Tour Championship.

Breaks of 91 and 65 helped Murphy on his way to this afternoon’s victory. In the 22 years since they first met on the professional circuit, it is the first time there has ever been a whitewash in a match between Murphy and Carter.

I’m really pleased and it has carried on the form I’ve shown for most of this season, when I’ve been allowed to play! In some of the matches I’ve had in recent weeks I haven’t been allowed to play and you can’t win from your chair! Given the chance, I can still do it, ” said nine-time ranking event winner Murphy.

The patience required in snooker is the biggest test of all. We did a school visit at the Prestbury St Mary’s in Cheltenham yesterday and I was really hammering home the point about perseverance, resilience and never giving up. I think to some degree that’s been my challenge this season. Having prepared well, constantly practised hard and sacrificed quite a lot to make a physical difference to myself, some of the matches I’ve lost have been hard to take. You have to keep dusting yourself down, getting off the floor and keeping going. I know that if I keep doing the right things, eventually it will pay off.”

Glasgow’s Anthony McGill scored an impressive 4-1 win over recent Scottish Open winner Gary Wilson to book his place in the last 16.

McGill, who made the semi-finals of the Northern Ireland Open earlier in the season, composed breaks of 69 and 76 on his way to victory and now plays Sam Craigie, who beat Tom Ford 4-2.

After the match, the two-time ranking event winner revealed that he has been working with 2002 World Champion Peter Ebdon, who is also in the corner of world number 12 Jack Lisowski.

McGill said: “We’ve just seemed to get together for a little bit. It is worth trying. I think John Higgins has mentioned there are a lot of players looking for that edge. I’m no different. I’d love to be doing better than I am. Peter has been there, done it and got the t-shirt. He is helping me a lot.

You look at players like Ronnie O’Sullivan and think there is something magical about him, whereas I look at Peter and think I could get as much out of my ability as Peter has. He is a good guy to have in my corner.

This afternoon’s other game saw Luca Brecel beat Welsh Open champion Joe Perry 4-1. The Belgian now plays Judd Trump in the last 16.

I’m not sure I’m thrilled about the news that McGill is now working with Ebdon 🙄 … Ants is already more than capable enough to turn any match into an exhausting grinding fest, he doesn’t need to get any help to improve on that. That said, this week, that’s not the way he’s played. His scoring has been very good.

Evening session

Superb Saengkham Downs Rocket

Thai number one Noppon Saengkham recorded his first ever victory against seven-time World Champion Ronnie O’Sullivan, coming through a 4-2 winner at the Duelbits World Grand Prix in Cheltenham.

The shock win continues Saengkham’s excellent showing so far this week. He’s already beaten four-time Crucible king Mark Selby 4-1 in the opening round and now progresses to face an in form Mark Williams in the quarter-finals.

Saengkham had lost all three of his previous encounters with 39-time ranking event winner O’Sullivan, but today’s result sees him finally get a win over the Rocket.

O’Sullivan now has it all to do to qualify for the next stage of the Duelbits Series, the Players Championship. Only the top 16 on the one-year list will earn a place in Wolverhampton and the 47-year-old must at least make the semi-finals of the Welsh Open to stand a chance of qualifying.

It was O’Sullivan who made the strongest start this evening, with a break of 70 to take the opening frame. Saengkham had an opportunity to take the second, but broke down on 53 and O’Sullivan stepped up to make it 2-0.

From that moment it was Saengkham who took a stranglehold on proceedings. Breaks of 68 and 96 helped him into a 3-2 lead and a superb long range pink in the sixth got him over the line a 4-2 victor.

I feel over the moon, because Ronnie is a hero for all snooker players. It isn’t easy to beat him. I had to beat my heart first,” said world number 33 Saengkham. “I still want to win a trophy. I want this week to be my week.

It is a good test for me to beat Ronnie. I had to do something to beat him. I had to beat him to help myself to do something bigger in the future. It is a good day for me.

Williams continued his sparkling run of form to set up a meeting with Saengkham, scoring a 4-0 win over Ding Junhui.

The 24-time ranking event winner made the final of the Masters on Sunday, but was narrowly beaten 10-8 by Judd Trump. Williams showed no signs of a hangover in his opening match this week, beating Welsh compatriot Jamie Jones 4-1.

This evening’s tie saw Williams dominate in the break building department. Runs of 67, 65 and 69 helped him establish a 3-0 lead and he had looked like easing over the line in the fourth, before breaking down on 57. Ding battled back into the frame and got down to the final black. However, he eventually left a roll up safety short and handed Williams the tie.

Local hero and world number 12 Jack Lisowski kept his run going with a 4-2 win over China’s Zhou Yuelong. That sets up a quarter-final clash with number one seed Mark Allen, after the Northern Irishman beat Joe O’Connor 4-3.

The way Ding lost the last frame is something you won’t see often. He had the possibility to extend the match, the last black was over the green pocket, he played it slowly and the cue ball didn’t reach! Ding looked like he was playing well again in the first half of this season. I can’t help to wonder how much the current match fixing scandal is affecting him. Probably a lot because the majority of the players involved play at his Academy. That’s such a shame.

On what happened on the third full day, here are the reports by WST and some personal comments

Afternoon session (the last session of the last 16 round)

Trump Reaches Quarters

Judd Trump whitewashed Luca Brecel 4-0 to earn his place in the quarter-finals of the Duelbits World Grand Prix.

The world number four arrives in Cheltenham off the back of what he describes as the “biggest win of his career”. Trump edged out Mark Williams 10-8 in an epic Masters final to lift the Paul Hunter Trophy for a second time at Alexandra Palace last Sunday.

The Juddernaut continued his momentum with an entertaining 4-2 win over Iran’s Hossein Vafaei in round one, but faced what looked to be a stern second round test this afternoon against Belgium’s Brecel.

The Englishman wasted little time in securing victory. He took a clean sweep of the frames thanks to breaks of 57, 62, 72 and 79, with the match lasting just an hour and 14 minutes. He now faces a quarter-final tie against Xiao Guodong, who beat Ryan Day 4-1 this afternoon.

Trump said: “I’m probably playing a little bit better than I did last week. I’m scoring a bit heavier. I should have had a maximum in that match and I should have had a century in the last frame as well. I still get a bit disappointed when I’m not clearing the table up. The hard work was done and the frame winning breaks were done. It would have been nice to do it in style but another winning performance.”

Shaun Murphy scored a 4-2 win over Kyren Wilson to earn his place in the quarter-finals. The Magician composed breaks of 79 and exactly 100 on his way to winning.

Englishman Murphy needs a strong showing this week to ensure he continues progressing through the Duelbits Series. The 2005 World Champion currently sits in 14th position on the one-year list. Only the top 16 will make it to the Players Championship, with eight making the finale at the Tour Championship.

Next up Murphy faces Scotland’s Anthony McGill up next. McGill was in fine form during a 4-0 demolition of Sam Craigie. The two-time ranking event winner fired in breaks of 78, 55, 131 and 76 on his way to victory.

Luca Brecel played some outstanding safeties in that match but didn’t score enough when he had the opportunity. That was quite unexpected. Maybe he’s working on his safety game and is a bit in a transition period.

Evening session (first of the Quarter Finals)

Saengkham Continues Dream Run

World number 33 Noppon Saengkham scored his first ever victory over three-time World Champion Mark Williams, winning 5-3 at the Duelbits World Grand Prix in Cheltenham to reach the semi-finals

The Thai has enjoyed an extraordinary run so far this week. He beat world number two Mark Selby for the first time in five years in the opening round, before a first ever win over 39-time ranking event winner Ronnie O’Sullivan in the semis and a maiden win over Williams this evening.

Saengkham is through to the semi-finals of a ranking event for the third time. His previous last four appearances came in 2018, when he was knocked out in the last four of the Welsh Open and World Open and he also made the semis at the 2022 British Open earlier this season. However, he is still chasing a first appearance in a ranking final. He now faces number one seed Mark Allen, who he lost out to in the semi-finals of that British Open.

Williams will have to wait a bit longer to cash in on his fine form and capture silverware. He went on a sparkling run to the final of the Masters last week, but lost out 10-8 to Judd Trump in an epic title match.

Saengkham started quickly this evening and made a break of 93 to take the opener, before adding the second to lead 2-0. Williams dug in to claim a fragmented third and then composed a break of 85 to take the fourth and restore parity at 2-2 heading into the mid-session interval.

They traded the next two frames, with Saengkham then taking the seventh to move 4-3 in front. The eighth frame came down to the final ball, with Saengkham potting a superb pink into the right middle and then depositing a cut back black to get over the line a 5-3 victor.

I am very happy today. It is a very big win to beat Mark Williams. I tried to protect every ball, but his long potting is so good.” said 30-year-old Saengkham. “I have had a very good performance this week. I am so happy. I still can’t believe it because in the last few months I haven’t been on form. I am here now and it is amazing.

I have three experiences of semi-finals. This time I will try my best. I have good experience now. I will enjoy and keep smiling. I think this week is going to be my week.”

Allen earned his place in the last four with a gruelling 5-4 win over Jack Lisowski, which took four hours and 21 minutes.

The Northern Irishman has been the form player of the season so far, having notched up wins at the Northern Ireland Open and the UK Championship to top the one-year list. However, he had to summon all of his battling abilities in tonight’s game.

The pair traded 95 breaks to share the opening two frames. Lisowski then made it 2-1 by taking the third, before a marathon fourth. The frame lasted 58 minutes, with a portion of that being taken up by a debate over the award of a free ball, which Lisowski eventually elected not to take. It was Allen who took it in the end to go into the mid-session all square at 2-2.

World number five Allen won two of the next three to move to the verge of victory at 4-3. However, a stunning contribution of 68, with the balls in difficult positions, saw Lisowski force the decider. A break of 67 in the final frame was the decisive blow which got Allen over the line to book a last four meeting with Saengkham. Afterwards the Antrim cueman emphasised the importance of being able to battle when not at your best.

Allen said: “To be honest it is more important having a B game. You probably play your very best a couple of times a season, or a handful of times a year. You need to have that B game and sometimes your C game to get through. If you can nick those matches when you aren’t at your best it turns your season around. Two years ago I had a terrible season, because I lost almost every decider I played. I wasn’t getting on the right end of those close games, I’ve got on the right end of nearly every one this season. It makes a huge difference.

Noppon is a class player. He is much improved and someone I rate very highly. I played very well against him in the semi-finals of the British Open. I need to play something like that to win tomorrow. He looks like he’s absolutely flying this week. I maybe need to try to do a bit of what I did tonight and keep him off the table.

For all those who downplayed Noppon Saengkham merit this week, there you have it. You don’t beat Mark Selby, Ronnie and Willo in the course of half a week if you don’t play very, very well. Noppon has been aggressive all week, his long potting has been deadly and his break building excellent. Mark Allen is clearly aware of that and his plan is clear: he will be on a mission to prevent Noppon to play. That’s what he did against Jack Lisowski yesterday, with partial success but enough to win more frames than him. And of course, he scored well when in as well.

Also, many UK viewers have complained because table 2 is not available to them. They are right. OK ITV is the main broadcaster, but if they don’t show it, why can’t it be made available on another platform?

Snooker News – 19 January 2023

This is a kind of “low key” post as I must confess that what was revealed yesterday regarding the match fixing enquiry has been affecting me.

In relation to that, WST has announced changes in the draw of upcoming events. Nothing unexpected here of course.

There was actually one good news coming out today

Jessie May Donation Boosted To £15,000

WST has decided to increase its donation to official charity Jessie May Children’s Hospice at Home to £15,000, based on the number of century breaks made at the Cazoo Masters.

Before the tournament at Alexandra Palace started, WST pledged £500 for every century up to a maximum of £10,000. But the final century tally was 30 and WST will now donate the full total based on £500 per century, which is £15,000.

Bristol-based charity Jessie May provides nursing care at home for children and young people with life limiting conditions who are not expected to live beyond the age of 19.

WST Chairman Steve Dawson said: “After such a fantastic Cazoo Masters tournament and a barrage of centuries, we have decided to boost the donation to Jessie May up to £15,000. We know what amazing work they do for vulnerable children and their families. The pandemic has really affected their funding and we urge everyone to have a look at what they do and dig deep to support them because private donations are vital to their future.”

Kim James-Coggins from Jessie May said: “All of the team at Jessie May are truly grateful for the support from WST. The impact your support has on our nurses and families is incredible.”

To find out more about Jessie May, visit jessiemay.org.uk

I’m glad that WST took that decision considering that many families, especially the most “vulnerable” ones, continue to suffer from the combined effects of the pandemic and the Brexit induced economic crisis in the UK. There is nothing worse for a parent than to lose a child, or to raise a child knowing that their life expectancy is limited and every day is a struggle. Well done WST, well done the players who scored as many as they could.

As for the match fixing issue, I can only urge everyone to wait for the results of the hearing and the full facts before asking for “life bans” … What annoys me is that some of those taking the harsh stand are the same who regularly pleaded leniency for Stephen Lee, asking for him to be allowed back “because he has such a Rolls-Royce cue action”. There should be consistency, no matter the nationality of the players.

IF it is proven that some of the older players in that group lured/coerced their young compatriots into a match fixing scheme, yes, they should get a life ban and should be sent back to China with no possibility to return to the UK or anywhere in Europe. Not just because of the match fixing, but more importantly because the vile betrayal of confidence. I’m sure that many parents of Chinese teenagers sent to the UK to play professionally were glad to know that their kids weren’t alone and that older, more experienced fellow citizens would be there for them. It’s only normal. It would be the same for UK parents if their teenagers were sent to live as ex-pats in Asia. That betrayal, above all, IF true, is unforgivable.

Snooker will survive. Cycling survived the countless doping scandals. The Tour the France is still watched by millions. Formula One survived despite the terrible decisions that deprived Lewis Hamilton. A couple of heads fell and the circus goes on. Snooker is much cleaner than most sports, especially those that attract the BIG money.

2023 World Grand Prix – Ronnie goes out to Noppon Saengkham in the L16 round

Noppon Saengkham beat Ronnie by 4-2 in the last 16 round at the 2023 World Grand Prix. Ronnie was the defending champion and started well, winning the first two frames but was outplayed from the third frame on.

Here are the scores:

Noppon was by far the better player from the third frame on. Ronnie made too many mistakes, and looked under pressure whilst Noppon looked focused and calm. This defeat means that Ronnie’s chances to play in the Players Championship are now extremely thin. He will probably need to make the final at the Welsh Open for that to happen and that looks very unlikely considering the way he’s playing at the moment and the lack of confidence that was obvious today as soon as Noppon started to come back.

Here is the report by WST:

Thai number one Noppon Saengkham recorded his first ever victory against seven-time World Champion Ronnie O’Sullivan, coming through a 4-2 winner at the Duelbits World Grand Prix in Cheltenham.

Here what Ronnie had to say on twitter:

Congrats to Noppon, he played amazing and potted some great balls. He’s a really improved player. I gave it my best, it wasn’t good enough on the day. But I’ll be back!!

With some images:

Here are some more quotes By Ronnie, as reported by Phil Haigh

He played amazing, potted some great balls, great positional play. He just played brilliant, he’s such an improved player,

I watched him play Selby, he played some fantastic stuff and he carried it on today. I’ve got no complaints, I gave it my best and it wasn’t good enough on the day.’

I don’t know if I played well or bad, I just gave it my best and it wasn’t good enough on the day.

I was 2-0 up, he managed to reel four frames off on the spin, played some good stuff, every credit to him.

You can’t begrudge anyone victories in any sport or any game. Very rarely have I lost a game that I think I’ve deserved to win.

On the prospect of missing the Players Championship, and then the prestigious Tour Championship for the top eight on the one-year list in April, the Rocket added: ‘I don’t really know. I don’t really worry myself with making events or making cuts.

I just play every tournament as it is, enjoy playing, enjoy competing. If I don’t make the Players Championship I’ll just fill my time up doing exhibitions.

I just love playing, I enjoy being on the road and the thought of not being on the road is not a good feeling.’

Noppon Saengkham totally deserved the win. Good luck to him in the rest of the tournament.

THE WPBSA Conduct Regulations

Part 1 WPBSA Conduct Regulations – Betting Rules

  1. 2Betting and Corruption Misconduct

2.1. It shall be a breach of these Rules for a Member to do any of the following:

2.1.1.    Betting:

2.1.1.1.   to place, accept, lay or otherwise make a Bet with any other person in relation to the result, score, progress, conduct or any other aspect of the Tour and/or any Tournament or Match in events sanctioned by the WPBSA or its affiliates

2.1.2. Corruption:

2.1.2.4.   to solicit, induce, entice, persuade, encourage or facilitate any Member to breach any of the foregoing provisions of this paragraph 2.1.2.

2.1.4.1.  to engage in any other conduct (ie beyond that specified in paragraph 2.1) that is corrupt or fraudulent, or creates an actual or apparent conflict of interest for the Member, or otherwise risks impairing public confidence in the integrity and/or the honest and orderly conduct of the Tour and/or any Tournament or Match

2.1.5. Attempt or complicity:

Part 1 WPBSA Conduct Regulations

4.2. Any Member becoming aware of an Approach (as defined in clause 4.1 above) being made to another individual shall report such Approach to the WPBSA (via either the Company Secretary, a Tournament Official or the Anti-Corruption Hotline) as soon as reasonably practicable and in any event within 24 hours of becoming aware of such Approach.

4.4  Each Member shall co-operate with the WPBSA in any investigation carried out by the WPBSA under the provisions of these Rules including (but not limited to):

4.4.1. providing a written statement setting out in detail all of the facts and circumstances with respect to any alleged breach 4.4.2. attending to answer questions and provide such information at a time and place determined by the WPBSA 4.4.3. providing to the WPBSA upon its request any documents, information or any other material of any nature whatsoever held by the Member and

4.4.4. procuring and providing to the WPBSA upon its request any documents, information or any other material of any nature whatsoever not held by the Member which the Member has the power to obtain and

4.4.5. providing the WPBSA with access to all records relating to the alleged breach. This includes, but is not limited to; betting accounts, bank records, telephone records, internet service records, social media accounts, email and other records stored on phones, tablets, electronic devices, computer

So… here we are.

Clearly Liang Wenbo and Li Hang should get very lengthy bans if a lifetime ban isn’t a realistic option in law.

I’m not entirely sure what “concerned” means in this context. Does it mean that they were aware of approaches or actual fixing and failed to report?

There are a variety of offences indeed. Apparently, Bai and Zhao Xintong did not fix any match. Chang Bingyu and Zhao Jianbo fixed just one match. The above does not say if they the were or may have been coerced into doing so.

The three older players are also (probably) guilty of obstructing the investigation.

It’s quite awful but at least it’s in the open and hopefully snooker can move on once the hearings are done and their outcome made public.

2023 World Grand Prix – Ronnie beats Barry Hawkins in Round One (L32)

Ronnie whitewashed Barry Hawkins yesterday evening at the Centaur in Cheltenham to keep his hopes to climb in the top 16 of the one year list alive.

Here are the scores:

And the report by WST:

Defending champion Ronnie O’Sullivan got his campaign underway with a 4-0 win over 2017 World Grand Prix winner Barry Hawkins.

The Rocket succumbed to a gut wrenching 6-5 loss against fellow Class of 92 member Williams in an epic Masters quarter-final last week. However, he looked unaffected in his emphatic win this evening.

Breaks of 100, 64, 52 and 65 were enough to see O’Sullivan over the line in just over an hour. Next up the seven-time World Champion faces Noppon Saengkham, who defeated Mark Selby 4-1 this afternoon.

World number one O’Sullivan is currently ranked in 21st position on the one-year list and needs a successful week to maintain his chances of progressing in the Duelbits Series. Only the top 16 will qualify for the Players Championship and the best eight will make the Tour Championship.

O’Sullivan said: “I’m just enjoying playing. I’m enjoying competing. I need to have a good run here and in the Welsh Open or my season is pretty much done, until the Six Red World Championship and Sheffield.

In fact, Ronnie is now provisionally 20th in the race to the Players Championship, but finds himself 12000 points behind Joe O’Connor who is 16th in that list, and that’s a lot. Ronnie has withdrawn from the German Masters, and didn’t enter the Shootout, so he really needs to to go deep in this one and the Welsh Open if he wants to play in the next event of the series.

Tonight Ronnie will face Noppon Saengkham, who played very well in beating Mark Selby by 4-1 on the opening day. Should Ronnie win, he would then play the winner of Ding Junhui v Mark Williams in the QFs. It’s not going to be easy…

2023 World Grand Prix – Day 1

Cheltenham is best known for its horse races, but this week it hosts a snooker race to the 2023 Players Championship. Yesterday was the first day of the tournament and it yielded one big surprise…

Here is the report by WST:

Lisowski Beats Close Friend Milkins

Jack Lisowski came from 3-1 down to edge a Gloucestershire derby with Robert Milkins 4-3 at the Cheltenham Racecourse in round one of the Duelbets World Grand Prix.

Lisowski, 31, and Milkins, 46, have known each other since the former was just eight years old and both have recently described the other as being like a brother. This evening’s match had added significance for them, competing in their home county.

The pair are at different junctures in their respective careers. While Milkins finally landed a maiden ranking title by winning last season’s Gibraltar Open, six-time ranking finalist Lisowski is still hunting his first piece of major professional silverware.

Lisowski came within two matches of a dream first title last week at the Masters. He scored his first ever match wins at Alexandra Palace, beating John Higgins and Hossein Vafaei to make the semi-finals. However, his event was ended after a 6-0 whitewash loss against Mark Williams.

It had looked as if Lisowski was set for an early exit this evening, when he found himself 3-1 down. Milkins missed a routine red in the fifth, leading 52-1 with an opportunity to wrap up the win. He was ruthlessly punished by Lisowski, who made a match saving break of 60 to steal and make it 3-2.

The following two frames saw Lisowski at his brilliant best, as he fired home runs of 102 and 86 to secure victory and book a last 16 meeting with Zhou Yuelong, who beat Thepchaiya Un-Nooh 4-3.

Lisowski said: “I’m very happy. We are in my home town, so at 3-1 down I was thinking about my friends and wanted to make a game of it. Luckily Rob missed with a chance to win. I cleared up and turned the match around. I would have been gutted to lose first round. Rob looked fantastic tonight and it took everything I had to beat him.

It was horrible at the end. I should feel great, but then I saw him. It is hard playing your friends. I was apologising and I’m sure he would have been the same beating me. You can never get used to it, but it’s snooker and it’s an individual sport. If I want to win the title, I have to beat my mates.”

Number one seed Mark Allen got his campaign underway with a 4-2 win over David Gilbert, to recover from a 6-0 whitewash loss at the hands of Barry Hawkins at last week’s Masters.

The Northern Irishman has been the standout player of the season so far, having claimed tournament wins at the Northern Ireland Open and the UK Championship. As a result he has a significant lead at the top of the one-year list, having accumulated £402,000 so far. Only the top 32 are here this week, with the best 16 progressing to the Duelbets Players Championship and the top eight making the Duelbets Tour Championship.

Allen top scored with a fine break of 133 in this evening’s victory and now plays either Joe O’Connor or Lyu Haotian in the last 16.

Nobody puts any more pressure on me than I do. That won’t change whether I’m number one seed or not. I just concentrate on my game and do the best I can,” said 36-year-old Allen.

The Tour Championship is one of my favourite events. If you get in that you’ve had a good season and then can compete against the top players over a long distance. That is a good warm up for Sheffield as well. These three events are brilliant, it is amazing what they have done. World Snooker and ITV have come together to put them on.”

Xiao Guodong scored the biggest shock win of the event so far with a 4-1 win over world number three Neil Robertson. Xiao’s biggest contribution in the tie was a break of 54 and he faces either Ryan Day or Ricky Walden in round two.

I do hate the constant use of the word shock but I certainly wasn’t expecting Xiao to beat Neil, never mind with that scoreline and just one break over 50, a modest 54. Neil has struggled with health issues recently of course and maybe he’s still not well and fit.

I watched the Allen v Gilbert match and, at the start, both players appeared to struggle badly with the table conditions. They got used to them though, and, after the first couple of frames, it was a good match.

The “All Asian players are fixers” brigade was at it again yesterday, pointing out at bookies odds to prove that there was no confidence in either Zhou or Theppy to actually try to win… well … the match went 4-3, as you would expect because those two are of comparable strength overall. Zhou made a century in the deciding frame and had breaks of 107, 104, 66, 60, 59 and 58. Obviously not trying to win then. Theppy is notoriously inconsistent and when his scoring power is bit off and mistakes creep in, he struggles. He had just one break over 50 yesterday, a 87, but still won three frames.

Breaking News! Sponsor found for the 2023 World Grand Prix, Players Championship and Tour Championship

WST has been quick to find a replacement for Cazoo … they no doubt expected the sponsorship withdrawal given Cazoo’s well documented issues.

Here is the announcement:

Duelbits Joins Forces With WST

WST is delighted to announce a new partnership with Duelbits, as title sponsor of all three events in the prestigious 2023 Duelbits Series.

Launched in 2020, Duelbits is a crypto casino and sportsbook with an ambition to become a niche global brand, offering users better rewards and an easy-to-use product.

The three events in the 2023 Duelbits Series are:
Duelbits World Grand Prix, Cheltenham, January 16-22
Duelbits Players Championship, Wolverhampton, February 20-26
Duelbits Tour Championship, Hull, March 27 to April 2

For all three events, the field will be packed with snooker’s all-time greats and the players in form. The top 32 from the one year ranking list have qualified for next week’s Duelbits World Grand Prix, with Ronnie O’Sullivan defending the title against the likes of Judd Trump, Mark Selby, Neil Robertson, Mark Allen, Mark Williams and Shaun Murphy.

Only the top 16 progress to the Duelbits Players Championship next month, and only the top eight make it into the elite field for the Duelbits Tour Championship.

This outstanding trio of events receives extensive live television coverage from ITV, as well as a wide range of broadcasters across the globe.

WST Chairman Steve Dawson said: “We are thrilled to bring Duelbits on board for the first time, for three of our biggest tournaments. This series of events is unique because the players qualify through their performances during the season, so the players on form are rewarded and we are sure to see snooker of the highest quality.

“Our sport has a massive global audience, including tremendous viewing figures to a free-to-air UK fanbase on ITV. Duelbits have recognised this opportunity to grow their brand and join our journey as we continue to grow worldwide. We look forward to working with them through this series.”

Ross Haffie, Head of Sportsbook at Duelbits, added: “We are absolutely thrilled to partner with WST to bring to you the Duelbits Series. As Steve mentions, this Series rewards the best 32 players throughout the season and we see this as an ideal opportunity to grow our audience with one of the most prestigious brands in Worldwide Sport.”

and it’s back to the betting industry then … 🙄🙄

If you wonder what a sportsbook is … it’s the same thing as a bookie. “Chat, je te baptise Lapin” as we would say in French speaking Belgium.
